About the Cleveland Browns

2007-08 Cleveland Browns

The Browns had an exciting draft, and will most likely see improvement with Joe Thomas,  Eric Steinbach and Jamal Lewis on the offensive line. But on a team that went 4-12 last season, are these changes enough?  They have had more changes to their squad than any other NFL team, and very little to show for it. Browns ticket buyers can definitely expect their team to hustle to get out of the division basement.  One player fans can look to is Brady Quinn, who has all the tools this season to dominate the field.  And he will have lots to prove after being passed over 21 times in the draft.  Cleveland has improved their offensive line, but questions still remain on the right side.  Watching the Browns hustle for that success will definitely be exciting for fans.

Previous Seasons

In Cleveland, there are numerous sporting events a fan can attend. They can see LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in basketball or they can watch the Cleveland Indians in baseball. However, if you ask most fans in Cleveland, they’ll tell you they’re looking forward to football season and a chance to cheer their Cleveland Browns. When the team packed up and headed for Baltimore years ago, the city was left with nothing, but they worked hard to bring another franchise to the city. The fans have been with the present group of Browns through the few ups and the many downs and they’re convinced that if they just cheer a little bit harder or a little bit louder, they can will their team on to victory.

New head coach Romeo Crennel was formerly the New England Patriots coordinator. Crennel has long been considered one of the top assistants in the league and many teams had admitted publicly that the one thing that was hurting his chances most was the success of the Patriots. Their reasoning was that they wanted a coach that could start the off-season process as early as possible to scout for the draft and do all the little things, but in the last four seasons, Crennel was helping to lead the Patriots to three Super Bowl titles. The Browns are taking a chance on Crennel given that he has no head coaching experience, but the team is confident he can make the necessary adjustments and turn the Browns into a contender in the AFC.

Last year, Jeff Garcia was supposed to come into Cleveland and give the quarterback position a sense of stability after a tumultuous 2003 season where Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb split playing time. When Couch got hurt in the 2003 season, Holcomb stepped in and played very well, proving that he could lead a first team NFL squad when given the chance. Garcia was waived by San Francisco in a salary cap move and played slightly better than average last year before injuries took him off the field. Once again, Holcomb stepped up and showed he can lead an offense, but this year, neither Garcia nor Holcomb will be with the Browns and Trent Dilfer will leave training camp as the number one quarterback on the depth charts. Dilfer established himself as a starter during his days with Tampa Bay in the 1990s before heading to Baltimore where he won a Super Bowl. He has recently been in Seattle as a back-up to Matt Hasselbeck.

The Browns have most of their depth at tailback where former Denver back Reuben Droughns, acquired in the off-season, will join Lee Suggs and William Green in the backfield. Suggs has the most potential and explosion of the three but has had trouble keeping himself healthy in recent years. Droughns, a more powerful fullback type, could be in line for more carries in Crennel’s new system. Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was expected to make an impact as the target over the middle, but an off-season motorcycle joyride turned into a torn up knee and a missed 2005 season. Antonio Bryant, Dennis Northcutt, and Andre Davis should all contribute on the outside but the leader in the receiving corps this season might be Braylon Edwards, a rookie wide receiver out of Michigan. Edwards was taken third overall in the draft and was known for making some unreal plays in the college game. No one is expecting Edwards to post numbers like he did during his senior season but he could lead the team in receptions, yards, and even touchdowns. Robert Griffith led the defense last year with 118 tackles while Anthony Henry recorded a team high four interceptions. Ebenezer Ekuban led the Browns with eight sacks while Kenard Lang had seven sacks and a team high 9.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.
